Regional Scaling Out

Masiye Camp runs a regional scaling out initiative whose major objective is to be a resource in enhancing the capacity of partner organizations in Eastern and Southern Africa, in meeting the psychosocial needs of children affected by AIDS.

In this project, Masiye Camp works with partner organizations in the region through building their programming capacity in providing psychosocial support to children affected by AIDS. This is done through:

The following are Masiye partners in this project, Salvation Army Mozambique, Salvation Army Zambia, Salvation Army Malawi, Salvation Army Tanzania, Salvation Army Lesotho, Tanzania Pastoral Activities for People Living With AIDS, and Salvation Army Psychosocial Support Initiative (Botswana).

Lessons learnt:

  1. The concept of psychosocial support has been there all along in the different communities. Only that, different communities perceive psychosocial support differently. In most cases, all that needs to be done is to sensitize communities on the PSS elements that already exist in their midst.
  2. The program needs to come up with clearly defined indicators for scale up programs. However, it must be appreciated that indicators and monitoring and evaluation tools will vary from place to place.
  3. The PSS camps and kids clubs are easily replicated in any community as they use the principle of play which is universally acknowledged. Camping is a common tradition in most African societies particularly for initiating young boys and girls into adulthood. Communities only need to be assisted to use the concept to address the effects of HIV and AIDS on children
